The new lounge area will be where the existing kitchen is, but without the thoroughfare. Instead it will have stairs. The telly, plus bookcases will be adjacent to/under the stairs.
The stairs will be around 100-120cm deep; bookshelves are typically 25-30cm deep. Width of the space wall-to-wall is 3.4m
Option 1, favoured by the architect is a full height wall of bookcase doubling as the wall of the stairs/balustrade. It looks impressive, and it's a great idea, but JD and I are worried it shortens the viewing distance for the telly too much (about 2.2m from the face of the telly to the wall behind the couch. It does provide the possibility of a cupboard under the stairs for suitcases and sleeping bags and other rarely-used things.

Option 2 is a bookcase under the stairs, but flush with the edge of them:

| (I like the timber slats balustrade) |
Option 3, JD's strongly preferred option, is to have the shelves mounted flush against the wall. This would make the viewing distance 3.2m, as far as it can be given the configuration. (Our present viewing distance is 3.5m or so depending where the lounge chairs are.)

| This is a bit dark and low compared to ours. |

Upshot: I definitely want to see a 3D version of option 3 (set back as far as possible), with slats for the balustrade, like the second picture.
